Diabetes Management with Healthy Nutrition and Meal Planning

Diabetes Management with Healthy Nutrition and Meal Planning

 Three things will have a major impact on your blood glucose and blood lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides) levels

    * What you eat

    * How much you eat

    * When you eat

By selecting the right types of foods, as well as appropriate quantities you can significantly improve your ability to control your blood glucose and blood lipids.

What does healthy eating mean?

Healthy eating most certainly does not mean you will go hungry and have to spend much of your life desperately trying to resist temptation. You can still consume the food you like. All it means is that you will have to be much more aware of how much carbohydrate, fat and protein you consume each time you eat. You just have to get the balance right.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are most abundantly found in fruit, vegetables, yoghurt, sweets, pasta and bread.

Our body needs carbohydrates; we cannot live without them. When consumed, our bodies turn the carbohydrate into blood glucose – glucose is needed by our cells for energy and growth.

If you consume the same amount of carbohydrates each time you eat – especially if those times are at the same time each day – you will be well on your way towards controlling your blood glucose.

It is important that you do not skip meals, no matter what your blood glucose readings indicate. All you will achieve by skipping meals is a more aggressive fluctuation in your blood glucose levels – something you want to try to avoid.

If your consumption of glucose can follow a regular pattern, it will be easier for you to balance food with your medicine(s) and physical activity with optimum blood glucose control.

Variety and moderation

A varied and moderated diet is ideal if you want to enjoy good health. Your carbohydrate intake should consist of a variety of grains, fruits and vegetables. They have plenty of fiber – fiber helps control blood glucose.

Remember that brown rice has more fiber than white rice; whole-grain breads have the most fiber. If you are cooking or baking, opt for whole-wheat or whole grain flours. Include pulses, such as beans; they are a great source of fiber. Dark green leafy vegetables and dark yellow ones have a slower release of carbohydrates than most other vegetables.

Carb, protein and fat mix

According to the Mayo Clinic, your daily intake of calories should consist of:

    * Carbohydrates 45% to 65%

    * Proteins 15% to 20%

    * Fats 20% to 35%

If you adhere to your meal plan for portion sizes and eating times you should eat the same mix of carbohydrates, proteins and fats each day. Your blood sugar control will be ideal, as will your weight. The more you vary from your food plan, the Mayo Clinic informs, the more your blood glucose will fluctuate.

The rewards will be worth it

The ideal eating pattern for a person with diabetes is not really any different from what a non-diabetic person would do if he/she aimed for optimum health and fitness. However, the diabetes patient has the added incentive of trying to prevent complications from developing, such as cardiovascular disease, kidney problems, vision problems and leg and feet sores.

Foods on offer for a diabetes patient are extensive and varied. You will be able to plan a wide range of tasty and interesting meals.

The food pyramid

When you talk to your health care professional, diabetes educator or dietician, they will probably mention the Food Pyramid.

At the base there are foods rich in carbohydrates, such as grains, then there are fruit and vegetables.

Above are meat, fish, milk and cheese; which are rich in protein. At the top are the fatty foods.

Almost all diabetes and medical associations say that you should eat more from the groups at the bottom of the pyramid, and less from those at the top.

It is vital that you talk to an expert about your eating plan. It needs to be tailored according to your weight, age, which medications you are taking and how physically active you are (and, if so, when during the day you are likely to be the most active).

Glycemic index

Not all carbohydrates are the same. The Glycemic Index (GI) describes what effect certain foods can have on our blood glucose levels. A high GI tends to cause more blood glucose fluctuations than a low one. Ask your dietician.

Practicing to Get Smooth Feet at Home

Practicing to Get Smooth Feet at Home

 Most people experience rough feet at some time in their lives and trying to adopt different practices to get smooth feet  at home. Going barefoot and wearing sandals or thongs can make feet even rougher. Dry weather is also a main cause of rough feet. Cracked, peeling skin is unattractive and many times can also be very painful. Rough feet do not have to plague you for the rest of your life. A few simple techniques and a little time each day will give exceptional results.

Take out some time from your busy routine and follow these steps to get an instant results. Your pretty feet are not to hide under cover instead they should be flaunt and show off. If you think you can not afford to have a professional pedicure in a nail salon, treat yourself to one at home. You don’t need to book an expensive salon appointment to get the perfect pedicure. So go ahead get ready to do your own pedicure.

Prepare your feet:

Fill your bathtub or a bucket with warm water. Fill the tub with enough water to soak the feet. Add some bath salts or desired amount of foot soak into the tub. Let it dissolve. If you do not have bath salts or foot soak try salt from your kitchen.

Clean the nails:

Remove any nail polish from your toes.

Soak your feet:

Soak your feet minimum for 15-20 minutes. You may enjoy relaxing music, interesting magazine or wear a soothing face pack and enjoy the warm water on your tried feet.

Soften up:

Remove dead skin cells by gently scrubbing calluses and heels with a pumice stone. This is an important step to attain soften and touchable feet. This would help to exfoliate your feet, resulting in soft feet.

Massage you feet:

Dry your feet with a clean towel. Massage gently one foot at a time, then do the other. Begin by massaging the cream (Les Savons Foot Lotion soothes and smoothes rough feet) gently into the whole foot, top and bottom, toes to ankle. End this portion with strokes going from your toes to your ankles.

Trim nails:

Trim toenails, cutting them in a square shape which will prevent ingrown nails. Gently using the orange stick or cuticle stick push back cuticles . This will allow you to paint your entire nail by guiding the supple cuticle out of the way. Never cut your cuticles — they are necessary for keeping bacteria from entering the skin.

Pick a color:

If you wish to apply nail polish, choose a desired shade of polish. Apply each coat at a time, slowly. Apply the next coat once the last coat is completely dry. Repeat the step until you have achieved a desired shade of the polish.

Cuticles care:

Let your nails dry for at least half an hour, then rub a dab of olive oil into your cuticles and nail beds to moisturize them.

It is so much fun to indulge yourself in spa pedicure but the softness you experience from your home pedicure is comparable to the pedicures you might receive in a salon. Create a spa like atmosphere, play some relaxing music and enjoy. Don’t be shy to bare your toes in summer. It’s finally a time to get into cute, trendy and colorful sandals and flip-flops.

7 Day Cleansing Diet Plan for Weight Loss

7 Day Cleansing Diet Plan for Weight Loss

A 7 day cleansing diet can be a good idea if you’ve overindulged over the holidays or while on vacation and you need to get back on track with a healthier diet and exercise program.

Being super-focused on everything you eat for a week gets you back in the mindset of doing the right thing for your body after a period when you haven’t been doing so well.

When you think of a cleansing diet you might think of the Master Cleanse Diet or some other type of fad diet that involves eating little or nothing over the course of a 7 day cleanse.

While this sort of liquid diet or all one food diet is a popular idea of what cleansing is about, the truth is you can do a 7 day cleansing diet that involves more food than you might expect. The important thing is that you only eat certain types of food to help clean out your body.

7 Day Cleansing Diet

There are different ways to approach a cleansing diet. Some people like to detox by drinking only freshly squeezed fruit juices and filtered water for the duration of the cleanse, which is more like a fad diet, while others say that a seven day cleansing diet is all about cutting out the processed foods and meat and eating only certain kinds of foods for a week. The latter is a much more reasonable and balanced way of dieting. The important thing is that you only eat certain types of food to help clean out your body and do not starve yourself or this will not give results.

It is very important to have lots of water and if possible fruit juices during the 7 day cleansing diet plan. On the first two days, it is generally advised to fast, that is only have water or at the most some freshly squeezed fruit juice. From the third day you can include foods. Foods that are allowed include organic raw fruit and vegetables, steamed or stir-fry vegetables and brown rice. Preferably, stir-fry vegetables should only be cooked in virgin olive oil or sesame oil. Herbs and spices can be added.

You can eat as many of these food items as you like and as often as you like. Be sure to eat lots of green vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, celery, kale, chard and beet greens, and also be sure to have some fruit each day. If you still find this menu restrictive, then gluten free cereals and frozen rice waffles that contain no artificial flavors or refined sugars can be added.

Tips for 7 Day Cleansing Diet

The following are a few diet tips that must be followed during the duration of the cleanse.

    * Avoid all meat, fish and dairy products. It is also advised to avoid tofu, other meat alternatives and beans.

    * Do not eat any processed foods or simple carbohydrates.

    * It is advised to stick as much as possible to raw, organic fruits and vegetables as the main constituent of your food.

    * Make sure the juice that you have is freshly squeezed and not from a bottle.

    * In cooked foods, brown rice is the best option. It is a healthy fiber filled food that will help you feel fuller.

    * When you come out of the diet, don’t go back immediately to eating as you used to. Start by gradually adding in more cooked foods. After a week or so of transitioning back to a more regular diet, you should be able to start eating more meat and processed foods again.

    * Though some experts believe that a detox diet is not very effective, other researchers do agree that when not taken to extremes of fasting, the 7 day cleansing diet is healthy and beneficial.
