The 58 National Parks in the USA(14) Crater Lake National Park

Location. The beautiful Crater Lake National Park is located in southern Oregon, close to  the city of Medford.

Special features. This place is actually a “memory” of a destroyed volcano called Mount Mazama that had collapsed into itself during an eruption occurred 7,700 years ago. With its total surface of 741 km2, the park encompasses  the Crater Lake caldera (filled with approximately 4.6 trillion gallons of water resulted from snow melt and rainfall) and the surrounding forestland and hills. The most remarkable thing about the lake is the impressive depth, with 594 m at its deepest point, which makes it the deepest lake in the US, the second in North America and the ninth deepest in the world.

Thing to do. The park has many hiking trails that can be explored and two campgrounds where you can spend the night. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, biking or boating to Wizard Island, a cinder cone inside the lake are just some of the activities that can be “performed” here. Another option is to climb on the summit of Mt. Scott (2,722 m), a perfect spot to have a panoramic view of Crater Lake and its striking blue hue.
